Guess what I've been doing ....

Not hard to answer that question ....

I've been making beautiful little pink and cream baby beanies in the last week or so. It's a really nice style for winter because the garter stitch border at the bottom should make them a feel warmer. The most exciting thing about knitting these is choosing what to put in the middle of the flower. Eddie's a great help with these - when I give him 2 choices, 9 times out of 10 he chooses the one I was going to use. Husbands are very handy sometimes - not however when you've spread knitting, tape measure, scissors, pin cushion and various balls of wool all over the couch and he decides to come and sit with you. And then Isabella (pussy cat) arrives as well. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a knitter.

Because Easter's this weekend, our normal Devonport Craft Market is happening on Sunday 11th so I have another week to try and knit some tea cozies ... hmmmmmm not much different than a beanie really - I may just have to do something different at the top!! And not forgetting that tea pots have handles.

I noticed this morning it was getting nippier in Auckland. I love winter - the season when everyone wants, needs and has to have a beanie - preferably one of mine of course..........

My knitting week

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Last week was a busy one. I've discovered some interesting yarn at Spotlight - made by Moda - with little ribbon bits that stick out. The colours are stunning. They remind me of a stiff petticoat I had when I was a kid. Must have been the primmers I guess because we all had them and everyone hung upside down on the monkey bars so the other kids - boys I guess! - could see how pretty they were!

They had about 5 or 6 layers, all different colours and were made of tulle. Very, very pretty. Sarah from Cotton Kiwi had something similar at one of the Devonport Craft Markets and how I wished I had a little girl to buy for!!!

Anyway I've digressed - as usual .....

Pip, one of my best clients, had asked for a beanie and cardy set for a wee 6 month old girl. She'd seen a little newborn beanie Id made with the ribbon yarn - see, we did get back to the ribbon in the end! - and she asked if I could knit a matching cardy. This is what I came up with.

1980's revisited

These will make you laugh - or bring back memories! I found them carefully folded away in an old chest. I seem to remember the multicolured jacket was the first major pattern like this that I'd attempted. It must have taken ages to sew in all the ends!! I'm not sure why I've kept the other two - old times sake I guess. The very bright orange and yellow one was an Australian designer pattern ... if you look carefully you can see a boomerang and aborigine designs in it.

What a busy weekend! Knitting, knitting and more knitting! I had an order for beanies for two 3 month old baby boys - cousins - so figured that I'd do lighter blue stripes and then a darker version on the assumption they will have different complexions!

It's becoming harder and harder to find good buttons. I haunt Wild and Woolly and the quilt shop in Devonport and also the Bernina shop in Takapuna. These buttons are great - may be hard to see but the light blue bunny one is so cute - the dark blue car one came out of my button tin so may well have been bought 10 years ago!

One of my friends also ordered a 3 month old beanie and bootee set to be sent to London. I already had some gorgeous "pumpkin" bootees in stock and although Kylie liked the photo of the purple ones, I decided to knit beanies to match those and the cream and pink ones so she can have a choice. And I can pop the other set in my Felt shop to sell.

My hands feel a bit sore today!!!!

Beanies for Toddlers

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Here's some of the beanies I've been knitting over summer. I'm really enjoying putting the colour combo's and stripes together and deciding on buttons and pompoms - much more fun than knitting the adult ones!

Craft market

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

I had a stall at the Devonport Craft market on Sunday - hadn't been there since November last year as I don't have a summer product. It was great to make a couple of sales and even better to catch up with all the other stall holders.

Welcome to my blog! As you can see from my profile, I love knitting. Last year I sold my adult beanies through the Devonport Craft Market here in Auckland and also on Trade Me.

Heaps of people asked me if I had any toddlers and baby hats so I've expanded into those designs as well.

Looks like March will be an Indian summer - I'm looking forward to winter myself - for obvious reasons!
